Background: Fred ???, who will be seventy-four next week, was honoured last night (April 30th) with a spacial gala at Phllharmonle Hali by the Film Society of Lincoln Centre, which saluted him with a series of 30 clips from the movie he made between 1933 and 1953, in ten of which Ginger Rogers--also at the party-starred with him.

Astaire, talking to newsmen, saying he never thought of it all as an art, he was only trying to make a buck, and he didn't think he could sign, he just did it as part of the job. He says he never took himself too seriously, but was serious only in his work. Quick shot out side the theatre where the gala was held. Quick shot of Ginger Rogers, who says it was a fabulous evening. Later, Astaire, in evening clothes, explains some of his old dancing-film hits and recalls that someone asked him once why he often used a cane in his numbers. The questioner wanted to know, was it for sports?
