Background: General Idi Amin of Uganda visited the castles of Edinburgh last Thursday)15 July) during his visit to Britain. It's the first time the General has left Uganda since coming to power in an army coup last January -- and already a government spokesman in Kampala has had to deny a foreign news agency report that an unsuccessful coup d'etat attempt was made in his absence.
No official reason has been given for the General's visit to Britain, but he was joined in London on Tuesday by Uganda's Finance Minister, Mr Emmanuel Wakhweya.
SYNOPSIS: Holyrood Palace in Scotland, one of the Palace of the British Monarchy.
The President of Uganda, General Amin visited the Palace last Thursday. He's in Britain on a short visit. No official reason has been given for his visit, but he was joined in London on Tuesday by his Finance Minister, Mr Emmanuel Wakhweya. After their official business, they came here to Edinburgh to relax.
The Ugandan President toured the castle, and then made his way to probably the most famous of the castles north of the British border Edinburgh castle, now home of the King's Own Scots Borderers.
This is the first time President Amin has left Uganda since coming to power in an army coup last January....and already there's been talk of a coup in Uganda during his absence. This report, from a foreign news agency, was dismissed on Monday by a government spokesman in Kampala as false.
Before arriving in Britain, General Amin spent a day in Jerusalem, visiting among other places the Moslem holy places. He's a devout Moslem, and before leaving Uganda special prayers were held throughout the country for his safe journey.
