    Background: AT THE REQUEST OF THE BRITISH IN BERLIN, AMERICAN TROOPS GUARDING CHECKPOINT CHARLIE TODAY (SATURDAY) STOPPED FOUR SOVIET ARMY BUSES FROM CROSSING. THEY HAD TO GO BACK AND USE THE USUAL CROSSING POINT ON THE DIRECT ROUTE TO THE BRANDENBURG GATE AND THE SOVIET WAR MEMORIAL.

    THERE, EARLIER, SIX BUSES HAD ARRIVED BRINGING SOVIET CIVILIANS AND SOME ONE HUNDRED RUSSIAN UNIFORMED TROOPS, WHO GOOSE-STEEPED THEIR WAY TO THE MEMORIAL. THE MEMORIAL ITSELF IS IN THE BRITISH SECTOR, AND THE WREATH-BEARING CIVILIANS WERE REMEMBERING REN ARMY DAY, ON THE FORTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE SOVIET ARMY. IT'S KNOWN THAT THE BRITISH ATTITUDE IS THAT ALL VISITOR TO THE MEMORIAL ARE WELCOME PROVIDED THEY COME BY THE SHORTEST ROUTE.
