Background: The dispossessed...the Arab refugee problem in its most acute form...is a bitter issue between Israel, where over 200,000 refugees live, and Egypt, crucible of Arab Nationalism. This month bitterness erupted to a new peak as Israel ordered the removal of several hundred Arab tribesmen and their families from lands in Israel to the desert of Sinai over Egyptian border.
Refugees, many of them children, squat on the ground of a U.N. camp, set up at Al Koussaima, watching food supplies arrive by camel. Watching too patrol care of the United Nations Emergency Force guarding the armistice demarcation line and the Sinai international frontier. UNFE troops - from Yugoslavia - and U.N. observers move among the expelled families, hear stories of hostile acts by Israeli troops.
They tell of the killing of family members, and the burning of their tents to force them to flee into Sinai. Many are Bedouins - some 350 of them - who scraped a maagre living, as in Biblical times, from the land of Israel now being irrigated into fertile regions to provide a new life for displaced Jews of the world.
Providing relief - food, clothes, shelter and health treatment - is UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) and the UAR Government.
