Background: The Japanese government has ordered an immediate inquiry into an accident involving more than 50 workers at a nuclear power plant in western Japan. The Japan Atomic Power Company has been criticised for failing to report the original leak to radio active material on March 8th. The firm's president has accepted that they have responsibility for the accident.

A company spokesman said radio active water escaped when a storage tank was accidentally left open. Eight workers with mops and buckets began to clear up the water, and were later joined by more than 40 others. The company says the level of radiation was not harmful, but Labour Ministry officials are making further checks.

Radio active water later escaped into the sea, angering local fishermen. The accident is expected to fuel the campaign by ecologists against Japan's 22 nuclear power stations.
