    Background: AUSTRALIA, CANBERRA

Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke narrowly missed losing an eye when a cricket ball smashed his glasses during a match between his team of staff officers and the Canberra press gallery yesterday. Mr Hawke was batting and he slumped to the ground as the ball hit him. A large piece of glass was removed from his eye as he lay there and another piece was removed by a doctor later. His eye was badly scratched, but there was no permanent damage and he was able to return to the ground after hospital treatment with his eye heavily padded to see the end of the match. The ball that struck Mr Hawke was bowled by journalist Gary O'Neill.
