Background: In Israeli-occupied Gaza, Arab workmen hired by Israeli contractors, have just completed a 100,000-sterling breakwater jetty aimed at improving the outflow of citrus fruits being exported to Europe.

The coast at Gaza is too shallow for a port, but the new jetty will at least allow the cases of fruit to be loaded onto lighters. In the past porters used to wade out to see carrying goods, which were frequently lost or damaged, Since the Israeli occupation, goods have mainly been exported through the nearby port of Ashod.

The opening ceremony was conducted jointly by the Israeli Transport Minister, Mr Shimon Peres, and the Mayor of Gaza, Rashid el-Shauva.
