Background: THE AMERICAN TEAM WHICH CLIMBED MOUNT EVEREST ON MAY 1 IS PREPARING TWO FURTHER ASSAULTS ON THE 29,028-FOOT (8,847 METRES) SUMMIT. HOWEVER, THE TEAM REPORTED YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THAT THE KHUMBU GLACIER ICEFALL BETWEEN THE BASE CAMP AND CAMP ONE WAS BREAKING UP AND BECOMING DIFFICULT TO TRAVERSE. SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR THE FRESH ASSAULTS HAVE TO BE CARRIED UP THE ICEFALL.

FILM SHOWS PORTERS IN THE EVEREST REGION LAST MONTH, THE TEAM CROSSING A ROPE BRIDGE ACROSS A FAST-RUNNING STREAM, PORTERS TRYING TO RECOVER GOODS FALLEN INTO THE STREAM, BRIDGING A CREVASSE AND LONG-VIEW SHOTS OF THE MOUNTAINS NEAR EVEREST.

RADIO MESSAGES RECEIVED IN KATMANDU ON THURSDAY SAID THE TWO SUCCESSFUL CLIMBERS WERE JAMES WHITTAKER, AGED 32, OF WASHINGTON STATE, AND SHERPA GOMBU. THEY SPENT HALF-AN-HOUR ON THE SUMMIT AND PLANTED THE UNITED STATES AND NEPALESE FLAGS. THEY RETURNED TO THE BASE CAMP SAFE AND WELL.

THE AMERICAN TEAM CONSISTED OF 900 PORTERS, 50 SHERPAS AND 19 CLIMBERS. TWENTY-FIVE TONS OF EQUIPMENT INCLUDED 15,000 MEALS PACKED INTO 400 BOXES.
