Background: Seven Americans who won all of the 1976 Noble prizes, received their awards in stockholm on Friday (10 december) form Swedish King Gustaf. The ceremony was marked by an outburst form a demonstrator in the audience against professor Milton Friedman when he was about to receive the economics prize.

SYNOPSIS: Apart form the one outburst the ceremony was calm and well rehearsed, broadcast live in Sweden and the United States. The United States is the first nation in the 76-year history of the Noble tradition to take home all the prizes in one year. They included the prize for literature, physics, economics and chemistry. The peace prize was nt presented. The demonstrator yelled charges at Professor Friedman for alleged involvement in Chile.

Professor Erik Lundberg of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences apologised for the brief incident. But outside the concert hall, thousands of people marched in the streets. They claim that application of Dr. Friedman's theories by former students who have assumed positions of power in Chile has led to mass unemployment and misery there.

Dr. Friedman has denied charges that he acted as economic advisor to the Chilean military government of General Augusto Pinochet. He said in interviews that he had criticised the government's "oppressive policies".

Sweden's 30-year- old monarch Carl Gustaf presented the awards during the two-hour ceremony in the Stockholm concert hall. The Noble Foundation director earlier dismissed speculation that the prizes were all given to Americans to mark the United States' bicentennial celebrations. Other prizewinners were Saul Bellow for literature, William Lipscomb for chemistry, Burton Richter and Samuel Ting for physics and Baruch Blumberg and Daniel Carlton for medicine.
