Background: Australia scored three hundred runs on the first day of the fifth cricket test (21 April) against the West Indies at Port of spain, Trinidad. The Australian achievement against some fine spin-bowling by the west Indies was watched by one of the smallest crowds ever to run out for the first day of a test match in the West Indies. When Australian Captain, Ian Chappell, won the toes before the start of play, there were only about five hundred spectators in the stands. At the close of play, there were about a thousand with Australia having scored three hundred for the loss of six wickets.
The fifth test was reduced to a mere formality with the series already clinched by Australian wins in the third and fourth test. The other two were drawn.
Ross Edwards replaced injured Australian opener, Ian Stackpole who, with Ian Redpath, scored fifty runs before Redpath was caught at leg-slip for 36 runs.

SYNOPSIS: The West Indian team got off to a poor start on Saturday, the first day of the fifth cricket test at Port of Spain Trinidad. Lloyd bowling to Ross Edwards, who replaced the regular Australian opening batsman, Keith Stackpole, who was unable to play because of an in jury. Edwards went on to make seventy-four runs, the best total of the day.

After the dismissal of opener, Ian Redpath, the australian captain, Ian Chappell came into bat. He increased the scoring rate despite some fine spin-bowling from West Indian, Lance Gibbs.
