Background: SYNOPSIS: HERE IS SOMETHING BRAND NEW IN THE HELICOPTER WORLD - A HELICOPTER THAT CAN BE REFUELLED IN FLIGHT FROM AN AIR FORCE TANKER AIRPLANE. WHY DO WE REFUEL HELICOPTERS IN THE AIR? IN THIS CASE TO SAVE LIVES. THIS IS THE HH3E - A JOLLY GREEN GIANT OF THE AERO SPACE RESCUE & RECOVERY SERVICE. IN FLIGHT REFUELLING ENABLES IT TO STAY ALOFT FOR MANY HOURS NEAR THE AREA OF AN AIR ATTACK & PICK UP WITHOUT DELAY ANYONE WHO MIGHT BE SHOT DOWN. PREVIOUSLY, AIR RESCUE CREWS, LIKE FIREMEN, WAITED NEAR A BASE FOR AN ALARM, THEN FLEW OUT TO MAKE THE PICK-UP SOMETIMES THE ENEMY REACHED THE DOWNED MAN BEFORE THE HELICOPTER COULD. THE FIRST TESTS WERE HELD IN DEC. 1965 WITH THE MARINE CORPS C-130 TANKER; THE DROVE CHUTE & FUEL HOLDERS WERE PREPARED & THE TANKER TOOK OFF TO MEET THE HELICOPTER 4000' IN THE AIR. ALOFT, THE NEW CONCEPT WAS COMPLETELY TESTED - HOOKUPS OF SEVERAL MINUTES PROVED FEASIBLE IN DRY PUNS AT SPEEDS OF 120-140 M.P.H. THE HELICOPTER EASILY KEPT PACE WITH THE HUGE TANKER - IN FACT IT WAS HELD ALONG BY THE WAKE OF THE AEROPLANE'S WING. TODAY AIR REFUELLING OF HELICOPTERS FROM STANDARD TANKERS IS A PROVEN CONCEPT, DAY & NIGHT OPERATIONAL IN VIETNAM. THESE SCENES SHOW AN HH3E BEING REFUELLED FROM AN AIR FORCE TANKER
.....THE AERO SPACE RESCUE & RECOVERY SERVICE IS ALWAYS TRYING TO IMPROVE ON ITS JOB OF SAVING LIVES . THIS IS ITS LATEST LIFE SAVING MACHINE HH53B WITH GREATER SPEED, SIZE AND LIFT. IT TOO CAN BE REFUELLED IN FLIGHT FROM THE LOCKHEED MERCURY. HH53B IS A SISTER SHIP OF THE CH53A & IS HE LARGEST & FASTEST IN THE AIRFORCE. ITS TOP SPEED IS ALMOST 200 M.P.H; ITS CRUSING SPEED OVER 170 M.P.H.; ITS MISSION - SAVING LIVES ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD....
