    Background: THERE MAY BE AN ELECTRIC CAR IN YOUR FUTURE. NICKEL-ZINC BATTERIES DEVELOPED FROM SPACE TECHNOLOGY ARE BEING TESTED IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES LIKE THIS ONE. THE PLACE IS THE ARMY'S MOBILITY EQUIPMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COMMAND AT FT. BELVOIR, VIRGINIA. WHAT THESE RESEARCHERS ARE DOING HERE COULD HELP REDUCE PETROLEUM CONSUMPTION IN THE UNITED STATES. THE NICKEL-ZINC BATTERIES ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE ALMOST TWICE THE MILEAGE RANGE OF CONVENTIONAL LEAD-ACID BATTERIES...A CHARACTERISTIC THAT MAKES THEM GOOD CANDIDATES FOR USE IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES. THIS PARTICULAR RESEARCH IS PART OF A JOINT TEST PROGRAM BY NASA AND THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE TO ASSESS THE POTENTIAL OF NICKEL-ZING BATTERIES FOR USE IN MAIL PICK-UP AND DELIVERY VANS. BATTERY LIFE, PERFORMANCE, AND COMPETITIVE COSTS ARE ALL BEING EVALUATED. RESULTS OF THESE TESTS WERE VERY ENCOURAGING. BY COMPARISON, THE MAIL VAN WAS ABLE TO START AND STOP 600 TIMES BEFORE RECHARGING, VERSUS 305 TIMES FOR CONVENTIONAL BATTERIES. IF THE NICKEL-ZINC BATTERIES WERE MASS PRODUCED, AND THE NICKEL ELECTRODE RECYCLED, IT WOULD LIKE THEM COMPARABLE IN COST TO PRESENT CAR BATTERIES.

    NASA'S LEWIS RESEARCH CENTRE IN CLEVELAND, IS IN THE PROCESS OF EVALUATING A VARIETY OF ELECTRIC CARS ALREADY ON THE MARKET FOR THE ENERGY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ADMINISTRATION. ERDA HAS BEEN ASSIGNED BY CONGRESS TO HAVE PRODUCED A FEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES WITHIN A YEAR...2500 WITHIN FIFTEEN MONTHS AFTER THAT, AND 5000 ELECTRIC CARS FORTY-TWO MONTHS FROM THEN.

    THIS LUCAS ELECTRIC VAN WAS MANUFACTURED IN ENGLAND, AND IS SHOWN HERE AT THE DANA TEST TRACK IN MICHIGAN. LEWIS ENGINEERS MEASURE BATTERY CURRENT, AND STUDY ACCELERATION, COAST DOWN TIMES, AND BRAKING DYNAMICS. WHAT RESEARCHERS HOPE TO DO IS DEVELOP A LARGE BODY OF INFORMATION ON AS MANY ELECTRIC VEHICLES AS POSSIBLE.

    ON A DIFFERENT FRONT, BUT NOT UNRELATED, IS THIS BATTERY-POWERED CART THAT IS CHARGED BY THE SUN'S ENERGY. IT AND SEVERAL OTHER PIECES OF BATTERY-POWERED EQUIPMENT WERE USED TO MAINTAIN THE GROUNDS AREA ON THE MALL IN WASHINGTON, D.C. LAST SUMMER. WHEN THE BATTERIES NEEDED RECHARGING, THEY WERE "PLUGGED INTO" THIS PHOTOVOLTAIC ARRAY. ONCE USED ONLY BY HIGH-FLYING SPACECRAFT, SOLAR COLLECTORS LIKE THESE MAY WELL BE PART OF OUR ENERGY SYSTEMS IN THE FUTURE.

    NICKEL-ZING BATTERIES CHARGED BY THE SUN... A COMBINATION THAT MAY ONE DAY LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON OTHER FORMS OF ENERGY.
