Background: INTRODUCTION: China has come a step closer to playing in the World Cup Soccer finals in Spain next year. On Sunday (4 January) a vigorous Chinese team beat North Korea 4-2 in extra time. China now goes on to the final qualifying round to meet the winner of the other three Asian Zone groups, which still have to be decided. The top two teams will then play in Spain in 1982.

SYNOPSIS: China started the game badly. The North Koreans, in red shirts, threatened the Chinese goal as early as the second minute. China's captain Chi Shangbing caught a fast ball but Korean right-winger Li Chang Ha on a fast turn kicked the ball home for the 1 - nil lead.

The first half was scrappy, but it saw China equalise in the last minute. Substitute Huang Xiangdong crashed the wing-pass on the post from where it deflected across the line. The second half brought two bad blunder by the goalkeepers.

In the first Chen Xirong kicked the ball off Korean Kim Changgun's hands.

Two minutes later China's goalkeeper Li Fusheng presented Korean defender O Yong Nam with an easy header. The score two-all to the end of regular time.

The Chinese used the break to relax on the field. In the end they proved to be the fitter side.

The first fifteen minutes of extra time brought no score, but five minutes from the end, Huang Xiangdong scored a tremendous goal from 25 metres (yards) out. His shot fire straight past the Korean defence and keeper Kim hardly saw the ball.

That brought the score to 3-2 for China, but the team wasn't satisfied yet.

Three minutes from full-time Guo Guanming put North Korea decisively out of the game. His Chinese team-mates were delighted.

With a final score of 4-2, China is now through to the Asian final of the World Cup Qualifying round.
