Background: Boxing, and on Monday (1 June), Yoko Gushiken of Japan knocked out Chilean challenger Martin Vargas to defend his World Boxing Association junior flyweight title for the 12th time, a world record for the class.

SYNOPSIS: The championship was held in the municipal stadium in Kochi on the Japanese island of Shikoku. Both fighters fought almost evenly in the first two rounds, each testing the other. Gushiken and Various entered the ring at the same weigh...48-point-eight kilograms (107 3/4 lbs).

In the fifth round, Gushiken came in strongly, throwing short punches to Vargas's face. The champion knocked Vargas down for a count of eight with a sharp left to the challenger's jaw. But Vargas stood up as the referee took the count.

Gushiken's breakthrough came in the eight round of the scheduled 15-round bout. The 24-year-old champion floored Vargas with a left to the face then a right to the jaw.

Vargas immediately stood up and carried on the fight.

At one minute 42 seconds into the eighth round, Gushiken again knocked Vargas down for a mandatory eight count. While Vargas took Gushiken's punishment leaning against the ropes, the referee halted the fight and awarded the champion a knockout victory Gushiken, so far unbeaten, has now won 22 fight, 15 by knockout.
