Background: In Brazil, a Presidential candidate, General Joao Batista de Oliveira Figueiredo joined a Roman Catholic brotherhood on Sunday (25 June). General Figueiredo was chosen by President Ernesto Geisel to take over leadership of Brazil's military government next March. His candidature is being challenged by two politicians. It is the first time since the coup of 964 that the official candidate for Presidency has been opposed. General Figueiredo was accepted into the religious brotherhood in the native city of Rio de Janeiro.
SYNOPSIS: The service took place in the Church of Our Lord Jesus of Bonfim in the Sao Cristovao district of Rio. General Figueiredo and his wife, Dona Dulce Maria, were to be accepted into the brotherhood of "Our Lord Jesus of Bonfim and ??? Lady Paradise" After reading the declaration of faith, the couple withdrew to the private robing ceremony.
After being chosen to succeed to the Presidency in February, General Figueiredo retired from his post as head of Brazil's Secret Service to concentrate upon electioneering. He has been accepted by the ruling National Renewal Alliance Party (ARENA) as their official candidate and now has to be chosen by the ARENA dominated electoral college. Although his selection is almost assured, General Figueiredo is being opposed by Senator Magalhaes Pinto and General Bentes Monteiro, who have the support of Brazil's official party, the Democratic Movement(MDB).
