Background: SAINT NOM LA BRETECHE, NEAR PARIS, FRANCE

Australian golfer David Graham scored his first major victory of the year when he won the Lancome Trophy tournament of golf champions at Saint Nom La Breteche near Paris on October 24. Graham, the defending champion, shot a final round of 70 for a 12-under-par 276 total. He had a winning margin of two strokes over Spaniard Severiano Ballesteros, who had a closing round of 69. Peter Jacobsen of the US, ended with a score of 284 but compatriot Craig Stadler took third place with a total of 280. Veteran American Arnold Palmer, who carded his second successive 68 in the last round, shared fourth place on 281 with Britain's Sandy Lyle, who had a disappointing final round of 74. Graham, the leader all the way after an opening 66, slipped behind Lyle on the last round, when the Scot birdied the first and the third from six feet and the Australian bogeyed the fourth. But Graham, who won 13,300 pounds sterling (22,600 US dollars) held off a great challenge from Ballesteros, winner of the World Matchplay Championship in England a week earlier.
