Background: The table tennis team from the People's Republic of China which arrived in Canada on Thursday (March 30) was making its first visit to the Western Hemisphere. The 27-member team, which includes two world champions, arrived in Canada from Paris. It was on the first stage of az series of matches in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

SYNOPSIS: Twenty-seven table tennis players from the People's Republic of China arrived in Ottawa, the Canadian capital, on Thursday. They flew to Canada from Paris, where they stayed briefly on their way to a series of matches in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The team included men's world champion Chang Tseg Tong and women's world champion Ling Kwe Ching.

The Chinese flag was hoisted over their hotel in their honour. The team leader said earlier in Paris that they expected to promote friendship between China and their host nations.
