Background: Africa's 40 nation science conference ended ten days of debate in the Senegal capital, Dakar, on wednesday (30 January) with a call for studies on the possibility of a University of Africa and advanced research centres to help develop new African technologies.

The proposals came in the final report of the conference sponsored by UNESCO - The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation
The basic point made in the report was that any new technologies should be suited to african needs, come from Africa where possible and use African resources.

There were also suggestions of extensive co-operation between African universities. those countries without broad research facilities should have experts made available by UNESCO through its own specialised bodies.

Other reports studied and adopted actual technologies which African states should now investigate and exploit by 1975 where possible. The main projects involved the harnessing the power of the sun, the wind and water.

Delegates also looked at ways of reversing the African "brain drain".

The conference was attended by UNESCO director general Rene Maheu.
