TRANSCRIPT: "QUESTION: General Imbert, did you kill President Trujillo?

IMBERT: Yes, I did with seven more Dominicans...and I'm willing to do again because he was a tyrant and he had killed thousand and thousand of Dominican. So we did it to give the freedom to this country...so this country can be a real democratic country."

Background: General Antonio Imbert Barrera was wounded by gunfire Tuesday (March 21) in Santo Domingo. A hospital spokesman said he was not seriously injured.

General Imbert was a key figure in the turmoil in the Dominican Republic two years ago. After supporters of Juan Bosch staged a rebellion, two groups emerged: the rebels, led by Col. Francisco Camaano Deno and a junta of National Reconstruction led by General Imbert. He resigned when Hector Garcia Godoy became provisional president in 1965.

Before that, General Imbert was one of the band of eight men who assassinated dictator Rafael L. Trujillo in 1961. He and another man are the only survivors of that group.

A monument to the assassins stands along the seacoast in the Dominican Republic, as shown in our film. Recently vandals stripped the sign from it, and wrote: "Thus we deal with Communists." The vandalism appeared to be the work of some person or persons opposed to the assassination of Trujillo who were accusing the assassins of being communist oriented. There have been rumours of a possible return to power of the Trujillo family and its supporters.

On Tuesday, General Imbert was driving his car in the outskirts of Santo Domingo when another car sped by and a fusilade of shots was fired. Twenty three bullet holes were counted in the General's car. He managed to drive to International Hospital where he was operated on and bullets removed from both shoulders. The hospital said his condition was not serious.
