Background: In Djakarta, July 25, Indonesian Foreign Minister Subandrio and Chinese Peoples Republic Ambassador to Indonesia, Huang Chen, discussed the question of Chinese residents in Indonesia.

Their private meeting followed Chinese protests against Indonesian bans on foreign retail merchants - mostly Chinese - in rural districts, and clashes between these Chinese and Indonesian troops which culminated in the death of two Chinese women in West Java earlier this month. Thousands of Chinese have already returned to China, and 50,000 have registered for repatriation. Relations between the two countries have become progressively more strained.

After a two hour session Mr. Huang Chen left, and Dr. Subandrio told newsmen a solution had been reached on the Chinese problem; but he would not say what it was.
