Background: The finals of the Soviet high-speed underwater swimming championships were held at Moscow's Olympiyski sports complex on August 5. The unusual swimming style involves the competitors racing with both feet in a single flipper and arms outstretched holding a baton-shaped float. The ladies' 100 metres race was won by 20-year old student and world-record holder Yelena Goikolova in 42.54 seconds. Alexei Zhukov, an 18-year old student from Novosibirak, broke a world record for the third time at these championships when he won the men's 100 metres final in 35.90 seconds. The swimmers in the 400 metres races are allowed to use snorkles because of the distance covered. Another world record was set at the ladies' 400 metres final by a 17-year old schoolgirl from Kiev, Svetlana Uspenskaya, who knocked out her opponents with a time of three minutes 29.72 seconds. For Miss Uspenskaya it was also the third world record broken at the championships. The Soviet competition is a trial for the world championships to be held at the Olympiyski sports complex in late August.
