Background: Israeli security forces in the north of the country killed four Arab guerrillas in the early hours of Monday morning (10 November), shortly after the guerrillas had crossed over the border from Lebanon.

Israeli military sources said the band, which crossed the border about midnight southwest of the Israeli village of Metullah, had infiltrated only a few hundred yards (metres) before being pinned down. The guerrillas were eventually killed eight hours later.

Although the security forces continued their search, they believed that the whole group were killed after studying footprints. During the fighting and subsequent searches, the area was closed to traffic and the opening of schools was delayed.

Military sources said that the guerrillas had apparently planned to take civilian hostages from Metullah and exchange them for imprisoned comrades. The four dead men wore civilian clothes and carried Russian-made rifles, explosives and ammunition. They were found hiding among rocks in an apple plantation, and were killed in an exchange of fire lasting less than two minutes.
