Background: Dr. Janet G. Travell held a Press conference in Washington, USA, Jan. 27, after her appointment as physician at the White House. She is the first woman to hold this post - and the first civilian to do so since the Harding Administration.
She is a New York, USA, orthopaedic specialist, and married. She has been the Kennedy family doctor for some years, and the President describes her as a "genius". An old football injury to President Kennedy's back was complicated when his torpedo boat was sunk by a Japanese destroyer during the Second World War. Dr. Travell helped his recovery after an operation.
She hope he would take time to use the White House swimming pool... that was her only advice to him.
