Background: INTRODUCTION: In spite of a recent opinion poll which showed that two thirds of the French people want to keep the guillotine, the President of France, Francois Mitterrand has pushed through parliament his bill for the abolition of the death penalty.

SYNOPSIS: The guillotine in Fresnes Prison, outside Paris, in shortly to be consigned to a museum since the abolition of the death penalty. The death sentence which could have been passed for more than 200 types of crimes in France, will simply be replaced by life imprisonment.

The last person to die by this method was immigrant worker, Hamida Djandoubi, nearly four years ago. Three people were condemned for murder just after President Mitterrand's election. Many saw this as a test case of the new policy but the death sentences have been commuted. The guillotine was originally introduced in 1789 to replace the old system of decapitation for the rich and hanging for the poor. The Chief Executioner of France, Marcel Chevallier, a retired printer of 60, admits there is a little possibility of the guillotine being used again.
