Background: Five thousand people marched in a half-mile column behind the Communist Party Executive banner at the funeral of British Communist leader Harry Pollitt, cremated at Golders Green, London, U.K., July 9.

Notable mourners included American negro Paul Robeson, the Dean of Canterbury, past and present General Secretaries of the National Union of Mine workers - Arthur Horner and Bill Paynter, Willie Gallagher - former Communist M.P., Abe Moffat - President of the N.U.M., and John Wood, representative of Scots miners. Russian, Bulgarian and other Communist delegations marched in the procession.

At the funeral ceremony Paul Robeson sang two songs - "Joe Hill", the story of an American trade union organizer, and "England Arise". Mourners joined in "The Red Flag" and the "Internationale", and Purcell's Organ and Trumpet Voluntary was played.

Harry Pollitt died aboard the liner "Orion" on his way back from Australia and New Zealand, where he had been speaking at Communist rallies. He was 69, and alife-long member of the Communist Party, General Secretary from 1929-56 and Chairman from 1956 until his death.
