Background: INTRODUCTION: Rioting erupted in West Berlin on Tuesday night (22 September) following the death of a young man during a demonstration earlier in the day.The man was hit by a vehicle during a protest against the eviction of squatters by police. At least 100 policemen were injured in the riots and 123 arrests were made.West Berlin's minority conservative administration now faces a motion of no-confidence over police handling of the evictions.

SYNOPSIS: The rioting between soon after the death. After laying flowers on the spot where the man died, protestors built barricades of blazing wooden planks, tyres, and burning cars.

Fires were started and shop windows smashed and the contents looted during the rioting.Cobble stones dug from city streets were flung at police, who made frequent baton charges, and later used tear gas and water cannon against the crowds.

For years, squatters have occupied houses in dilapidated inner-city districts. The election earlier this year of a conservative city Government committed to clearing the houses brought the battle against squatting to a new height.Eight houses were cleared but about 150 are still occupied, and more rioting like this is feared if the attempts to clear them continue.

There were violent sympathy protests in other cities in West Germany within hours of the trouble in West Berlin. The city's government is also faced with a no-confidence motion by opposition parties who lame it for Tuesday's death.
