Background: Weighing 18 tons and 225 feet long, Britain's Kew Gardens' newest flagpole was hauled into place, Nov. 5.

It was carved out of a Douglas fir tree - a gift from British Columbia, Canada. Soldiers of the Royal Engineers pulled it up using a winch.

This was the end of more than year's work on the tree. It had to be seasoned and shaped; the shaping made lifting easier -nineteen tons of wood were planed off.

Now it's finished, with the Union Jack fluttering over two hundred feet in the sky. Kew Gardens claim it as the biggest flagpole in the world.
