Background: INTRODUCTION: The Foreign Minister of the Vietnamese-backed Phnom Penh regime in Kampuchea, Mr. Hun Sen, has been visiting India. On Monday (31 August) he met the Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting took place at Government House in New Delhi.

Mr. Hun Sen presented Mrs Gandhi with a small statue of Buddha as a mark of the close relations between the two countries. India has recognised the Heng Samrin government, much to the displeasure of the Chinese, and did not attend the United Nations conference on the Kampuchean situation, which was strongly supported by the Chinese.

Mr. Hun Sen and Mrs. Gandhi talked for forty minutes. During his visit Mr. Hun Sen has been meeting Indian ministers to discuss increasing trade between the two countries. He told a news conference that he thought more co-operation between Kampuchea and India would lead to more prosperity for both of them.
