CU Mrs. Meri HOLD SOUND DOWN FOR 6 FEET
MRS. MEIR: "The tragedy that has taken place only highlights what is leaking in the area. And what is locking in the area is that after all that has happened, not only since 1967 but decades before, that the time has come when the people of the area should got together and make plans to live. Because these are the facts, whether Arabs in the are like it or not, the Arab states and Arab peoples and Israel and the Israeli people are going to live together in the Middle East. The sooner our neighbours are prepared to accept this very simple fact, which may not be pleasant to them but despite that it is a fact, and the sooner that they accept it and we get to serious making a plan to live together, the better."

Background: The Israeli Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, arrived in Washington, USA, on Monday (26 February) for a visit including meetings with President Nixon and Defence Secretary, Elliot Richardson.
She arrived in the wake of the controversy surrounding the shooting down last week of a Libyan passenger aircraft by Israeli fighters, causing the death of one hundred and six people.
Soon after her arrival in Washington, Mrs. Meir told newsmen that the people of the Middle East should be making plans on "how to live together". Arabs and Israelis would continue to live together in the Middle East and the sooner that was accepted and there were serious plans to live together, the better it would be.
