Background: Danish Prime Minister Anker Joergensen arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, on Monday (11 August) on a private visit to and his support for the Portuguese Socialist Party.
Mr. Joergensen is undertaking his three-day visit as the leader of Denmark's Socialist Party .. rather than as the country's Prime Minister.
He was met by Portuguese Socialist Party loader, Dr. Mario Soares, on his arrival.
Mr. Joergensen said, "I think the Portuguese leaders can relax about my coming to Portugal, it is only a matter of one Social Democratic leader contacting another Socialist leader".
Dr. Soares invited Socialist leaders from Europe and Israel to Portugal at a meeting in Sweden earlier this month.
The meeting, called by the Swedish Prime Minister to discuss common socialistic problems, pledged support for Dr. Soares, but so far Mr. Joergensen is the only leader to have accepted his invitation.
All at the meeting expressed grave concern at the political crisis in Portugal, and agreed that Dr. Soares' move in withdrawing the Socialist Party from the Provisionary Government had been a correct stop, but a bitter blow for pluralistic democracy.
