Background: Fighting desperately to force a draw and save the match, South African batsmen McGlew and Funston, February 1??? resumed their previous day's stand in South Africa's 'follow-on' second innings in the last days play of the Test cricket match against Australia at the Wanderers Cricket Stadium, Johannesburg.
McGlew was the first to fall. He was caught in the skips by Simpson off Benaud. His score of 70 brought South Africa's total up to 147 for 3.
McLean came into partner Funston and they settled back to block the Australian bowling. McLean edged a ball into the safe hands of wicket-keeper Grout and was out for a duck. Waite was another Grout victim, this time off Benaud. He scored ten. Burger came in and was quickly dismissed, caught by McDonald off kline. Two minutes later van Ryneveld was LBW to Kline for nought and the rout was on.
Tayfield was stumped by Grout, and Heine dismissed clean bowled, both for 'ducks'. Funston and Adcock were then left to end the South African innings. Funston played a ball from Benaud and called to Adcock for a run. Adcock stumbled and was stumped out for three.
Total score for South Africa was 198 plus a first inning total of 203, making a grand total of 401. This only equalled Australia's first innings total. Australia resumed after lunch needing only one run to win.
