Background: One of the classic events of the winter in western Canada -- the annual running of the world open sled dog derby at The Pas, Manitoba. For the derby -- all The Pas goes on a holiday schedule. the race itself is the big event but there are other things too -- The Pas is probably the only place in the world at which people flock to a street dance in below zero weather. The race itself -- one thousand five hundred miles -- over a period of three days. This year, veteran mushers said the course was one of the toughest in the eleven year history of the event.

The winner this year -- Art Allen -- a native of The Pas -- who now lives in the United States. This was the first lap -- Mr. Allen -- went on from here to win the overall victory. His prize -- one thousand dollars which he said he was going to turn over to the other contestants who didn't finish in the money.
