Background: The President-elect of Chile, Snr. Salvador Allende visited the hospital in Santiago where General Rene Schneider died on Sunday (Oct.25), three days after an unidentified assailant shot down the Army Commander in Chief.
On Saturday, Dr. Allende was elected president of Chile by a joint session of the Congress. He will assume his 6-year term on November 3rd.
General Schneider, the commander in chief of Chile's army is credited with keeping the army out of political process which selected Dr. Allende.
It is suspected that right-wing terrorists staged the attack on the general, although no arrests have been made as yet.
General Schneider's body was removed from a military hospital in Santiago to the Military Academy where it was to lie in state until Monday (Oct.26).
Raul Cardinal Silva led prayers at a religious service for General Schneider in the chapel. High government officials attended the service.
