Background: The skating centre at Medao, in Kazakhstan has been nicknamed the "record factory" because more than 40 world records have been set there since it was founded in 1952. Now experts are predicting even more records, because a new rink has been opened with a speed surface that pleased the expert skaters who attended the opening ceremony.
The 10,000 metre skating surface (nearly 12,000 square yards). is set in a sports complex which includes a hotel and medical facilities. Already the new rink is proving as good as the experts say -- a number of Soviet national records have already been broken.
SYNOPSIS: The mountainous region of Kazakhstan, in the Soviet Union, houses a sports centre known as the "record Factory". The skating centre at Medeo earned it nickname because more than 40 world records have been set there.
Now the twenty-year-old centre has a new ice rink. It has a surface of 10,000 square meters. Expert skaters who took part in the opining ceremony say the surface is so fate that new world records are bound to come.
Already Soviet natural records have been broken on the new surface.
The new arena is in a complex which includes a comfortable hotel for the competitors. The facilities include a wells equipped medical suite and even a row of booths to allow simultaneous commentaries in a variety of languages.
