Background: Conservation groups clashed with police in Brisbane, Australia, on Thursday (6 June) in one of the most violent demonstrations the country has seen in years.

The conservationists were protesting against the demolition of homes in the path of a new motorway.

Police were called in form all districts of Brisbane -- the capital of the northern sate of Queensland -- to prevent the 200 demonstrators form occupying a row of houses ass demolition crews began ripping off the roofs.

The protestors charged police lines and tried to let down the tyres of police vehicles. Running fights broke out as police tried to haul demonstrators away. Five demonstrators were later charged with using obscene language and resisting arrest.

The protestors threw sand in the faces of police and young women complained that police had pulled out their hair and struck them while forcing them into wagons. One man claimed he had been pinned over a picket fence and injured by a group of policemen.

The demonstrator dispersed, but later regrouped outside the office of the Queensland Main Reads Department. The Main Roads Department. The Main Roads Minister, Mr. Camm, agreed to meet a deputation in a week.
