Background: DR. RAJENDRA PRASAD, THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF INDIA UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT IN MAY 1962, DIED IN PAYNA, INDIA, TONIGHT (THURSDAY). HE WAS 78 AND HAD BEEN SICK FOR MORE THAN A YEAR.

DR PRASAD HAD A SUCCESSFUL LEGAL CAREER UNTIL 1920 WHEN HE GAVE IT UP TO SUPPORT MAHATMA GANDHI IN HIS CAMPAIGN FOR NON-COOPERATION WITH THE BRITISH. FROM THEN ON HE DEVOTED HIMSELF TO THE FIGHT FOR INDIA'S INDEPENDENCE, WHICH WAS FINALLY ACHIEVED IN 1947.

HE BECAME A LEADING MINISTER AND IN 1950 -- WHEN INDIA BECAME A REPUBLIC WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH -- HE WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT. THROUGHOUT INDIA, HE WAS RESPECTED FOR THE SIMPLE LIFE HE LED.

VISNEWS LIBRARY FILM RECORDS SOME RECENT EVENTS IN DR PRASAD'S LIFE. IN A CEREMONY AT THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE, DELHI ON NOVEMBER 5, 1960, DR PRASAD RECEIVED THE LETTERS OF COMMISSION FROM THE NEW BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER TO INDIA (A COMMONWEALTH POST EQUIVALENT TO AMBASSADOR), SIR PAUL GORE-BOOTH.

IN JULY 1961, DR PRASAD HAD TO BE TAKEN TO A PRIVATE NURSING HOME IN NEW DELHI WHEN HIS HEALTH STARTED TO CAUSE SOME ANXIETY.

HE WAS UNABLE TO RESUME HIS OFFICIAL DUTIES UNTIL DECEMBER 1961, AND IN MAY 1962, HE FINALLY RETIRED FROM OFFICE AND WAS SUCCEEDED BY DR SARVEPALLI RADHAKRISHNAN, WHO HAD BEEN VICE-PRESIDENT FOR 12 YEARS.

BUT IN THE EYES OF MOST INDIANS, DR PRASAD REMAINED AS ONE OF THE FATHERS OF THE NEW NATION - ONE OF GANDHI'S FAITHFUL GROUP WHO FOUGHT FOR AND ACHIEVED THE COUNTRY'S INDEPENDENCE.
