Background: NEW YORK WENT WILD MARCH I FOR ASTRONAUT JOHN GLENN. THE CITY OF SKYSCRAPERS SO OPENED ITS HEART TO THE SKY-SCRAPING COLONEL WHO CIRCLED THE EARTH THREE TIMES ABOARD A MERCURY SPACE CAPSULE, FEBRUARY 20. GLENN RECEIVED WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE THE MOST SPECTACULAR TICKER-TAPE PARADE OF ALL TIME - CERTAINLY IT WAS THE BIGGEST SINCE THAT ACCORDED TO AVIATOR CHARLES LINDBERG AFTER HE MADE THE FIRST TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT IN 1927.

THREE HOURS BEFORE THE START OF THE PARADE, CROWDS BEGAN TO ASSEMBLE IN THE NARROW STREETS OF LOWER MANHATTAN. LONG BEFORE COLONEL GLENN'S MOTORCADE ASSEMBLED FOR THE HOUR-AND-A-QUARTER LONG DRIVE UP TOWN TO THE WALDORF ASTORIA HOTEL, EVERY WINDOW WAS FILLED WITH PEOPLE AND THE STREETS WERE JAMMED TO CAPACITY. LOWER BROADWAY - RENAMED ASTRONAUTS WAY FOR THE DAY - WAS A HAPPY HUNTING GROUND FOR FLAG AND SOUVENIR SELLERS. A WINDOW CLEANER MANAGED TO FIND ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING VANTAGE POINTS AS THE PROCESSION MOVED OFF.

WITH HIS WIFE ANNIE AND VICE PRESIDENT LYNDON JOHNSON IN THE CAR BESIDE HIM, GLENN SMILED AND WAVED TO THE CROWDS. TICKER-TAPE, CONFETTI, EVEN TORN-UP TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES DESCENDED ON THE ASTRONAUT'S CAR, AS CHEERING CROWDS BROKE THROUGH POLICE BARRIERS AND BROUGHT THE PROCESSION TO A TEMPORARY HALT. ALL THE WAY ALONG THE ROUTE, THE STORY WAS REPEATED - CROWDS AND STORMS OF TICKER-TAPE. ON FIFTH AVENUE THE SUNLIT SKY APPEARED OVERCAST AT TIMES AS THE TICKER TAPE DESCENDED - THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING, TALLEST SKYSCRAPER OF THEM ALL, PROVIDED A SHOW OF ITS OWN. EVENTUALLY THE PARADE STRUGGLED THROUGH TO THE WALDORF ASTORIA FOR A WELL-DESERVED LUNCHEON, AND IT WAS TIME FOR THE STREET CLEANERS TO MOVE IN. THE MAGNITUDE OF A TICKER-TAPE PARADE IS MEASURED NOT IN SIZE OF CROWDS BUT IN WEIGHT OF PAPER. WHEN IT HAS BEEN COLLECTED IT WILL BE WEIGHED AND THE SANITATION DEPARTMENT WILL BE ABLEN TO DECLARE OFFICIALLY WHETHER OR NOT THE WELCOME NEW YORK GAVE TO COLONEL JOHN GLENN WAS, IN FACT, THE GREATEST OF THEM ALL.
