Background: An effigy representing South Vietnamese corruption was burnt near a Catholic church on the outskirts of Saigon on Wednesday night (30 October) to the cheers of about 4,000 people, while the main target of the demonstrators, the Saigon government, removed three of its top military commanders.

Two of the three generals whose dismissals were announced by Saigon radio Wednesday night have been sttacked by the largely Catholic anti-corruption movement which staged the rally.

After a torchlight procession through the streets of Gia Dinh district, the leader of the movement, Father Tran Suo Thanh, told the crowd -- which had grown from 1,000 to around 4,000 by mid-evening -- that he had heard of the dismissals.

But the Catholic priest said the removal of men was not important. It was a whole change of government policy which was needed.

After the cigar-smoking effigy, marked in English and Vietnamese as representing "Corruption" was set of fire, leaders of the movements spent the night at the church.

The same demonstrators took to the streets of Saigon on Thursday morning (31 October) to continue their protest against corruption within President Thieu's government.

Initial reports indicate at least 40 people were injured in violent clashes between the demonstrators and police.
