Background: THAILAND'S SECOND BLACK PANTHER DIVISION CONSISTING OF 5,000 TROOPS HAS COMPLETED SIX MONTHS OF VIGOROUS TRAINING AND IS NOW READY FOR COMBAT IN VIETNAM. THE TROOPS, SELECTED FROM MORE THAN 10,000 VOLUNTEERS, BOTH CIVILIANS AND SOLDIERS IN ACTIVE SERVICE WILL GO THERE NEXT MONTH. THEY HAVE BEEN TRAINING AT A MILITARY CAMP AT KANCHANABURI, ABOUT 80 MILES WEST OF BANGKOK.

THE DIVISION COMMANDER, MAJOR-GENERAL SAWADI MAKKHARAM, SAID THE TROOPS WOULD BE LEAVING FOR VIETNAM ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF NEXT MONTH AND WOULD REPLACE THE FIRST PANTHER DIVISION WHICH HAD SERVED ITS YEAR-LONG TERM THERE.

ON SUNDAY (JUNE 22), THE DIVISION "WENT TO WAR" FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PRESS. THE BATTLEFIELD TYPIFIED CONDITIONS THE TROOPS WILL MEET IN VIETNAM. PROPELLOR-DRIVEN SKYDRIVERS WERE USED IN BOMBING SIMULATED ENEMY MOUNTAIN STRONGHOLDS BEFORE TROOPS WERE MOVED IN BY HELICOPTERS.

DURING THE SIX MONTHS TRAINING, THE TROOPS WERE FAMILIARISED WITH FIGHTING IN ALL SORTS OF TERRAIN AND WITH SOLVING PROBLEMS WHICH ARISE IN THE BATTLEFIELDS.

THE TRAINING CAMP HAS A HISTORICAL NOTE. TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO IN THE SAME AREA. KING RAMA I OF THE PRESENT CHAKRI DYNASTY BEAT NINE DIVISIONS OF BURMESE FORCES WITH ONLY A "HANDFUL OF SOLDIERS". AND OF MORE RECENT SIGNIFICANCE, IT'S ALSO IN THE REGION OF THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI.
