Background: Next Tuesday (15 February) is Mardi Gras, the festival that precedes the sombre season of Lent in Roman Catholic countries. Nowhere is the festival celebrated with greater brilliance and colour than in Rio de Janeiro, where the three-day carnival starts on Sunday.
The festivities there have already begun, with balls and dances held throughout the city. This film, shot at the Club Sirioe Lebanese, shows just one of more than 100 balls being held during the festival season.
A special feature of Mardi Gras in Rio is the annual group of new music; composers have been working at full stretch to produce the sambas and marches for this year's festival.
