Background: In West Bengal, the last state to vote in the Indian elections, polling went ahead as planned on Wednesday (10th March) despite the threat of violence. Nearly 200,000 troops and police were stationed at various points in and around Calcutta. Officials feared that the widespread violence and killings of the past few weeks might continue.

Polling started on a quiet note in the morning but picked up in the afternoon. Despite the large numbers of police and troops, many extremists were arrested roaming the streets with open daggers to deter voters. Several bomb incidents were reported and an army spokesman said that at least five people were shot dead.
