Background: The city of West Berlin had an air of pre World War Two burlesque on Saturday (24 January) where hundreds of people of indeterminate sex turned our for the transvestites ball.
The spectacle was reminiscent of the bawdy and sometimes sinister nightclub life of West Berlin of the 1920s and 30s.
Girls were boys but more often boys dressed as girls at one of the most risque social occasions of the year. People lost their inhibitions as they donned costumes which bordered on the macabre. One wayward guest, seen leaving the men's lavatories, was dressed as a "Playboy Bunny" with breasts of a show-stopping, record-breaking size.
The atmosphere was jovial and mischievous as some of the more conservative guests attempted to pick the men from the boys and more to the point, the girls from the men.
The transvestites ball is one of the events that takes place during the carnival season of facing which marks the beginning of the end of winter.
