    Background: BANGKOK, THAILAND

INTRODUCTION: The Thai capital, Bangkok, is well known for its exotic nightlife. Foreign tourists patronising the bars and parlours bring huge amounts of much needed foreign currency into the country. But the Thai government is determined to change the rather seedy image of Bangkok.

SYNOPSIS: Patpong is the liveliest of Bangkok's entertainment districts at night. The bar-girls in the area are used to a periodic crackdown on their trade by the Thai government. But the latest police swoop is proving to be more severe than anything that has gone before.

The choice of entertainment for the tourist is wide. But Colonel Chamlong, a close advisor to President Prem, is convinced that the bars are a breeding ground of crime. He has insisted on closing all the bars strictly at midnight. Women found accompanied in places of entertainment are being arrested under a law little enforced in the past. Those residents of Patpong who make their living from nightlife call the Colonel Maha Chamlong -- a title usually reserved for monks.

At midnight, bemused foreign tourists are shepherded to their hotels. Local trades tell the government that the hordes of tourists hardly come simply to see the Thai temples. Many of the girls are being forced to leave by the strict enforcement of the laws to take similar jobs in the Middles East. Ancillary industries have also been hit -- dressmakers have been thrown out of work by the new rules.

At midnight, scores of armed policemen arrive on the streets to see that everyone goes home. The pimps who make immoral earnings out of the nightlife are rounded up. Police carry out a rigorous check of the licences of the Go-go dancers. But the crackdown is being opposed. The bar-girls plan a nude protest. Bar-owners serve policemen only water not alcohol. But Colonel Chamlong plans to keep up the offensive and strike at the city's gambling casinos next. While he has the support of the Thai President, there is little the traders can do.
