Background: Tonnis..and Martina navratilova, formerly of Prague, now living in Dallas, Texas, beat American top seed Chris Evert on Friday (7 July) to win the women's tennis championship for the first time. Chris evert was looking for her third Wimbledon Championship, but Miss Navratilova had been the players tip for the title although, she seemed rather nervous and tentative in her match against Australia's Evonne Cawley in their semi-final. Chris Evert on the other hand seemed relaxed in her semi-final with Britain's Virginia Wade. Before the match she had said though she and Miss Navratilova were very god friends she was going out there to win.

SYNOPSIS: There were four breaks of serve in the first eight games. Here Martina Navratilova serves but Chris Evert wins the point. Miss Evert achieved three of the breaks to go one set up in 25 minutes.

The match lasted 100 minutes and provided the packed centre court with plenty of excitement as fortunes ebbed and flowed.

Miss Evert's service began to fall to pieces and Miss Navratilova, serving here, began to volley with her usual authority, striking back at the start of the second sot, getting a break in front and holding on to level the match.

The final game of the set was a nightmare for Miss Evert, who made three unforced forehand errors and then overhit her backhand on set point. Miss Evert never settled into any sort of pattern and her play was littered with mistakes.

Miss Navratilova had spells of extreme nervousness and as the match went into the final set it seemed her notoriously brittle temperament might cost her victory. However she survived the tense climax far better than Miss Evert dropping only one point as she came from 5 to 4 down in the deciding set to win the match.

It was one of the most good-natured finals Wimbledon has witnessed in it's 101 years.

Martina Navratilova finally became the champion. The final score 2-6, 6-4 and 7-5. In the last five years she has been runner-up in the French, Italian and Australian and championships and has been a semifinalist at Wimbledon and in the U.S. Open.

The converted prize brings her a cheque for 17,00 pounds (30,800 dollars). Her elation was obvious as she acknowledged the applause from the crowd of 15,000.
