Background: A top-level delegation representing Palestinian Liberation Organisation arrived in Amman, Jordan on Tuesday (7 August) to hold talks with Jordanian Prime Minister Mudar Badran.

SYNOPSIS: The delegation is in Amman to meet with the Jordanian Prime Minister and to hold talks about the general situation in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Badran and Mr. Khaled Al Fahoum, the speaker of the Palestinian National Council, were also believed to have discussed the steadily deteriorating situation in southern Lebanon. The PLO representatives are visiting Jordan at the invitation of the Speaker of the Upper House of Parliament, Mr. Bahjat Al Talhouni.

Palestinian sources said the talks would cover the current situation in the Middle East, as well as the state of relations between the Palestinians and Jordan. The delegation is also expected to meet with King Hussein and other officials to brief them on the recent talks between Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky.

The PLO, an umbrella group for eight commando organisations, has been recognised as the sole representative of the Palestinian people by all Arab states, all Socialist countries, and most of the Third World. However it has not had much success in winning support in Washington. The Administration of the United States is adamantly opposed to two key PLO demands, for the right to return to homes lost with the establishment of Israel in 1948, and for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
