TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: BLUM: "The Draft resolution before us now is intended to exploit for the partisan and belligerent aims, the genuine concern felt by certain states about the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. At root however, it is in reality nothing but a vehicle for the continuation of the anti-Israel political warfare conducted by the Arab states and their supporters at the United Nations. Consequently, the draft is in flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and all it stands for, turning the organisation against its very raison d'etre, namely the promotion of international peace. Israel will, therefore, vote against this resolution, and treat it with the disdain it deserves."

SEQ. 3: SALIM: "Regarding this complaint the machine is locked. The result of the vote is as follows: ninety-seven in favour, ten against, thirty-eight abstentions. The draft resolution is therefore adopted."

SEQ. 5: NUSEIBEH: "We have don every everything in our power to bring about peace in accordance with U.N. resolution, but it's not the peace of the great. It's not having a whole population driven out form its country, and live in the wilderness of nowhere. This s not peace. If they want surrender, we will never surrender. We will have to restore our legitimate rights, and return to our country. And the nuclear capability that Israel has acquired to prevent the redemption of our rights, is not going to prevent us from restoring our legitimate rights in our ancient ancestral homeland. Thank you, Mr President."

The Resolution called on all states to end any cooperation with Israel that could help her to acquire and develop these weapons. Iraq, one of the so-called hardline Arab states, which fiercely criticised the Israel-Egyptian peace pact, sponsored the resolution.

SYNOPSIS: Five previous resolutions to establish a nuclear weapon-free zone in the Middle East have been passed. On Tuesday (11 December), Israel's Permanent Representative Yehuda Blum, presented his country's viewpoint on this latest resolution
The Deputy Permanent Representative of Iraq, Mr Saib A.K. Bafi, spoke in support of the draft resolution. He said Iraq and its thirty-eight co-sponsors of the resolution wanted to remove the danger of nuclear arms in the Middle East. He believed the resolution should be adopted, because it contained what he called valid material. later, Jordan's Permanent Representative, Mr Hazem Nuseibeh, said he hoped the General Assembly realised the danger hanging over Arab heads.
