Background: After a civil ceremony in the Royal Palace Dec 15, King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola drove in a glass canopied car through the mist shrouded streets of Brussels to the Cathedral Church of St Michael and St. Gudule for a religious ceremony performed by Roman Catholic Cardinal van Roey.

Preceded by a procession of 130 cars carrying guests including six Kings, four Queens, and 46 Princes and Princesses, King Baudouin and his radiant bride drove along a route lines with troops, and thronged by a thin but enthusiastic crowd.

Backgrounded by a colourful bank of pink and white carnations flown from Spain and arranged at the rear of the car, Belgium's new Queen looked radiant in a glittering crown as she acknowledged the cheers of the crowd.

At the bottom of the Cathedral's steps, the glass canopy was lifted to allow Queen Fabiola an easy exit. After a greeting by Monsignor Suenens, Assistant Bishop of Mechelen, the Royal couple were joined by the small pages and bridesmaids, boys wearing vivid red, and the girls dressed in blue velvet coat-dresses and traditional Flamish headdresses.

Preceded by two pages and a tiny bridal attendant, King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola walked down the aisle to be greeted halfway by Cardinal van Roey, who led them to the high altar.

At the high altar steps, faced by an imposing array of clergy, King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola took their places for the ceremony. The Queen's dress of white satin trimmed with ermine contrasted colourfully with the red and gold Cathedral decorations. She carried a spray of orange blossoms.

After Cardinal van Roey had asked the couple if they were willing to wed, a personal message from Pope John was read. Continuing the marriage ceremony, the couple exchanged rings and walked to an annexe to sign the marriage certificate. This was followed by a nuptial Mass conducted by Monsignor Suenens.

A trumpet fanfare signalled the end of the ceremony and the King and Queen emerged from the Cathedral thousands of pigeons were released from the square. Driving back to the Palace, they joined their many guests in a sumptuous wedding breakfast.
