    RIZAL WAS ONE OF THE GREAT FIGURES IN THE INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY. HE WAS ALSO A WRITER AND A POET. HE WAS EXECUTED BY A SPANISH FIRING SQUAD IN MANILA IN 1896, TWO YEARS BEFORE THE PHILIPPINES GAINED INDEPENDENCE FROM SPAIN.

    LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDE COLOURFUL FLOATS FOR THE PROCESSION, AND DETACHMENTS OF GOVERNMENT TROOPS PARADED THROUGH THE STREETS.

    THERE WERE ALSO SPEECHES FROM MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT, INCLUDING SECRETARY OF EDUCATION ALEXJANDRO ROCES, WHO IS CHAIRMAN OF THE RIZAL DAY NATIONAL COMMITTEE. ALSO PRESENT WAS SECRETARY OF COMMERCE BALMACEDA.
