AL-FAISAL: "I deem it a great honour and a privilege to be amongst you this evening. We are meeting on an historic occasion. It is for the first time in contemporary history that the West has begun to show some real interest in the world of Islam. The Islamic Council of Europe deserves to be congratulated for the pioneering initiative it has taken for focusing the attention of the Western world on the role of Islam, for it consists of ideals, values and principles and not merely certain manifestations of our culture. Brothers and sisters, I have come to this historic conference and am speaking to you this evening from the deepest recesses of my heart simply in one capacity... that of a Muslim. And I hope and pray to God that he will enable us all to play our rightful roles in the promotion of truth and justice and peace in this troubled, afflicted world." (Brief Arabic speech and applause follows).

Background: A member of the Saudi Arabian royal family, Prince Mohammed Al-Faisal Bin Abdhul Aziz, opened the International Islamic Conference at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Friday (3 April).

He praised the Islamic Council of Europe for focusing the attention of the West on the Islamic world and termed the conference a "historic occasion". He said it was the first time in contemporary history that the West had begun to show some real interest in the Islamic word.

The conference coincides with an important exhibition of Islamic book art which opened to the public at the British Library on Saturday (3 April). It is made up of Qu'ran (Koran) manuscripts from the eighth to 18th century -- many of which have never been displayed in public before.

Among the other guests at the conference opening was the Saudi Arabian Minister of Information, Dr. Mohammed Abder Yamani.

Concern had been expressed by British Jewish organisations that the conference and exhibition might be used as a platform for Arab propaganda against Israel.

This has been denied by the Islamic Council.
