    Background: JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

The giant South African diamond company, De Beers, is starting to promote diamond jewellery for men. The company, which dominates the world diamond trade, is hoping to corner a section of what is becoming a fast growing market. In Johannesburg, craftsmen are now turning their skills to fashioning men's jewellery. This is a significant development in South Africa's diamond market. It comes at a time when the demand for better quality and more expensive diamonds is weak. De Beers is currently stock-piling these larger and more profitable stones pending a revival in demand. But the revival will depend on a pickup in world economies. Not all diamonds have been hit by the slump in demand. The market for stones under 2,000 dollars a carat is reasonably good, and smaller stones of up to half a carat are still selling well.
